There are many benefits to be gained from the use of fillers in coatings but these are largely denied to the producers of clear coats by the need to maintain clarity. The functional filler nepheline syenite has been used for many years to improve hardness and durability of waterborne decorative coatings. The purpose of this study was to show that it can also be used for the same purpose in waterborne clearcoats without a negative impact on clarity. This makes it possible to formulate clearcoats with improved scratch and abrasion resistance without sacrificing other properties.
